General description
This course provides an in-depth overview of overhead crane systems with a strong emphasis on electrical safety, mechanical components, and preventative maintenance. It is designed to enhance participants’ knowledge of crane functionality, regulatory compliance, troubleshooting techniques, and safe operation.

Crane Structure & Mechanical Systems:
Crane bridge tracking, runways, wheels, and structural components.
Brakes: including load, holding, hydraulic, disc, and shoe brakes (Appendix reference).
Bridge and trolley drive machinery, hoist gearing, and couplings.
Preventative Maintenance:
Importance of regular inspection, maintenance planning, and recordkeeping for both electrical and mechanical systems.
Electrical Safety & Compliance:
Overhead crane electrical safety standards and regulations.
Proper use of electrical tools and safety equipment.
Fundamental Electrical Concepts:
Ohm’s Law, electrical theory, and power distribution essentials.
Motors & Motor Control:
AC motors, DC motors, wound rotor motors.
Motor maintenance, troubleshooting, and overload protection.
Crane Electrical Components:
Fuses, circuit breakers, contactors, mechanical/electrical interlocks.
Transformers, rectifiers, resistors, limit switches, and motor thermistors.
Control & Monitoring Devices:
Encoders, brakes (including electric load brakes and Magnetorque™).
Master controllers, radio controls, crane pendants, PLCs, and crane monitoring equipment.
Advanced Electrical Systems:
Crane overload limiters, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and basic speed control principles.

Course objectives
- Explain the function and operation of various A.C. crane control types, including single speed, two speed, step type, and adjustable frequency drives.
- Analyze and interpret power and control circuits to identify faults, assess performance, and troubleshoot system failures effectively.
- Identify and resolve common motor issues by recognizing symptoms, determining root causes, and applying corrective measures.
- Inspect, test, and adjust crane control components and protective circuits, including plugging, overload, and travel limit devices.
- Conduct thorough electrical inspections and perform preventive maintenance procedures, including brake system diagnostics and control system evaluations.
- Identify and isolate causes of abnormal crane bridge tracking to ensure proper alignment and operation.
- Analyze and determine the root causes of abnormal wear on crane components such as wheels, rails, and structural elements.
- Understand and apply criteria for component replacement to maintain safe and efficient crane operation.
- Demonstrate correct procedures for replacing and adjusting crane components in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Establish appropriate preventive maintenance items and service intervals to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
